Dhaka, Bangladesh: To build on the celebration of International Women’s Day, ICMPD’s Migrant Resource Centre in Dhaka and the District Employment and Manpower Office organised a stakeholders’ workshop on 9th March 2021. The discussion centred on addressing current gaps and challenges faced by potential women migrants. It was attended by more than 10 government agencies and civil society organisations working on migration in Bangladesh.
Among the recommendations arising from the workshop to further protect and empower women migrants are:
· Expand social protection for women migrants.
· Conduct a more interactive pre-departure training with the participation of returnee women migrants as resource persons in the training.
· Impose stricter screening of potential women migrants at an early stage, and not before they are about to leave.
· Conduct fora and dialogues on female migration also in destination countries.
Assistant Director General of the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training, Nafriza Shyama, was the chief guest during the workshop. She also inaugurated the new queuing system supported by ICMPD that will help streamline the processes for pre-departure at DEMO Dhaka. She also opened the Mujib Corner at the DEMO premises and the safe migration board of MRC. DEMO Assistant Director Jannatul Ferdous Rupa facilitated the workshop.
The project activities are supported by the European Union and Switzerland and implemented by ICMPD.
