External labour migration has been a significant livelihood strategy for many Tajiks for more than 15 years and has a major impact on all aspects of the life of the country’s population, from an economic, social, political and demographic perspective. Almost 30 – 40% of the economically active part of the population seeks foreign employment, thereby reducing unemployment substantially.
This activity is funded by the European Union through the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) managed project Improving Migration Management in the Silk Routes Countries. The implementing partner is Helvetas.
