High-level conference on migration in Tajikistan

Dushanbe, Tajikistan: On 6th September ICMPD participated in an international conference “Global Challenges of Migration Processes in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic with SCO: Problems and prospects” dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). This high-profile event was organised by the Ministry of Labour, Migration and Employment of Population in Tajikistan in joint cooperation with MRC and the International Organisation for Migration.

The gathering brought together over 40 high-level participants from SCO countries such as China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and representatives of the ministries and other international organisations. Tajikistan hosted the conference as a Chair of the SCO in 2021.

The discussions at the conference revolved around the challenges migrants have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic in respective countries, and possible solutions and recommendations to address these issues that have been encountered. The experiences shared by the representatives of the SCO countries were unique and diverse, and yet these were interlinked with the situations in sending and receiving countries.

On such an important occasion, the Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) Tajikistan has had an opportunity to present its information materials on migration in the form of brochures, leaflets, flyers, country profiles and the pre-departure modules’ handbooks, many of which are available on the MRC’s website too.

At the end of the conference, the Deputy Minister of Labour, Migration and Employment of Population, Ms. Nodiri thanked the MRC team and ICMPD for their support and cooperation not only in organising the conference but also for its overall continuous contribution to the provision of reliable and accessible information for Tajik migrants.
