Dhaka, Bangladesh: The second training on safe migration for Technical Training Centres (TTC) has been completed. The Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) jointly organised the online training with the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).
Funded by the German Federal Foreign Office together with the project Improving Migration Management in Bangladesh – which is funded by the European Union – the training was aimed at strengthening the role of Technical Training Centres to raise awareness about safe, regular and orderly migration. Ten districts that do not have District Employment and Manpower Offices (DEMO) in operation participated: namely Nilphamari, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Narayanganj, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Brahmanbaria, Laxmipur, Sunamganj and Meherpur. The Principals, Instructors, and Teachers of these TTCs and Bangladesh Institute of Marine Technology in Narayanganj attended.
Principals from Brahmanbaria and Meherpur TTC shared their insights and lessons learned from the first training and mentoring conducted in October 2020. They emphasized the need for more awareness raising on migration in remote areas in Bangladesh, because the people in these areas have limited access to news and social media.
The topics for the second training focused on the case management system from the Wage Earners’ Welfare Board, and engagement with national and local stakeholders on migration from the perspective of a civil society organisation. The second day of the training discussed the private sector’s role in promoting safe migration, and how skill development can be the key to safe, regular, orderly, and responsible migration.
ICMPD presented the “guide for the performance by TTCs of pre-departure services and training” which will serve as a handbook for the TTCs. After this training, ICMPD will launch another batch of campaigns to promote safe migration in these districts.
In his closing remarks, Director Sakawat Ali of BMET encouraged all the participants to apply the lessons learned in their respective districts and distribute information materials that they developed together with ICMPD.
