Kabul, Afghanistan: On the 29th March – 1st April 2021, ICMPD hosted a basic level training workshop on Document Security. The workshop was attended by 27 frontline officers from the Afghan Border Police (ABP), Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Afghan National Police Department (ANPA). The workshop was conducted by a selection of trainers with international experience.
The participants who attended the workshop are based at a number of border crossing points (BCPs) across Afghanistan, with half of the participants stationed at Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKIA), Afghanistan’s busiest commercial and private airport. The remaining officers came from 6 other major BCPs including Hairatan land BCP, Torghundi land BCP, Spinboldak land BCP, Kandahar International Airport, Herat International Airport and Balkh International Airport.
The international trainers worked in partnership with instructors from ANPA and experienced officers from the ABP to complement the online presentations. In addition, participants also took part in practical exercises and face-to-face presentations on the experiences of working on document security in the Afghan national context.
The best performing participants will be invited to attend a Training of Trainers (ToT) course series which will include a varied programme of events including study visits and further practical experience.
The fraudulent use of identity and travel documents represents a threat to the security of countries and their citizens, the economy, and global commerce, as it facilitates a wide range of cross border crimes and terrorism. The training was organised to strengthen the capacity of the participating officials and employees to detect frequently used techniques applied in the process of document security at BCPs.
The aim of this training is to enhance the operational capacities of border management agencies in Afghanistan, as part of ICMPD’s support to the country to improve capacity to effectively and efficiently manage national borders under the European Union funded Integrated Border Management in the Silk Routes project (IBM Silk Routes).
