MRC seminar on “Impact of technology on migrants’ journeys and migration processes”

To commemorate the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2022, the Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) Pakistan, organised a seminar in collaboration with the Department of Sociology, University of the Punjab on the topic of “Impact of technology on migrants’ journeys and migration processes”

This forum brought together over 92 participants and representatives from the FIA, Labour department, Punjab, senior media journalists and academia to explore the use and abuse of the technology in combating Human trafficking and migrants' smuggling. The panellists also highlighted the use of technology and its significant impact on the migration experience, journeys, entry and integration into destination countries, and links with family and communities in origin countries. On the other hand, technology allows criminal networks to operate internationally across jurisdictions and easily avoid detection. Traffickers use social media to identify and recruit victims, including children; emails and messaging services are used for the moral coercion of the victims, and online platforms allow traffickers to advertise services widely.

Effective use of social media platforms plays a vital role to reach out masses and raise awareness on danger and risks of irregular migration and human trafficking. The seminar is part of a series of awareness-raising activities held by the MRC Pakistan from July 25-30, 2022.
