Ankara, 26-27 November 2019 – For two days ten law enforcement officials from Afghanistan, Iraq and Turkey gathered with experts from ICMPD and the UK to discuss regional and bilateral law enforcement cooperation via existing international cooperation tools to counter irregular migration, human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
The officials discussed their status of law enforcement cooperation, specifically also via liaison officers who facilitate information exchange and operational cooperation on the ground. The British liaison officers from Afghanistan and Turkey presented good practice examples for international cooperation on organised crime in the field of irregular migration.
Afghan and Iraqi officials furthermore identified the specific training needs for their respective agencies to improve their capacities for international cooperation in the field of irregular migration and human trafficking. These will be included in the RELEC strategy 2020 – 2021.
